After all, who wants to invite people over to dinner when you have a cardboard table and one chair? For many people who are designed challenged decorating a space can be overwhelming. There so many different choices you need to commit to and hundreds of colors to choose from. The choices are endless and the possibilities of furniture placement simply are mind boggling. Where does the average person start when trying to create an interior decorated space? Start here with these simple interior design tips.

Before you make any decisions on furniture, color, theme, or placement pull out your measuring tape. Measure the area you want to decorate, concentrate on one area of your home at a time and if this is your first decorating experience, start small. Measure the perimeter walls, measure the floor diagonals and measure the floor to ceiling. At this point in your decorating you simply can not have too many measurements. Write everything down in a binder or notebook and keep everything organized. Measurements are vital to your interior design project, if what you finally decide to purchase does not fit in your space you will be discouraged all over again.

After you have your measurements, take a trip to the local paint store and start looking at colors. Do not purchase any paint on your first trip, you want to spend some time looking at the paint chips and finding colors that you like. Take a handful of paint chips home with you and put them in your decorating notebook. Look at the colors at different times daily for a least a week and record your thoughts about the colors each time you at them. By the end of the week, you will have a very good understanding of what colors you really like.

Now that you know what colors you like, start looking at the furniture you would like to have in the space. Go with what feels right for you, not what is traditionally expected. If you are decorating your living room but don't want a big bulky couch and would prefer to purchase chairs, go for it. The space is yours to decorate how you wish. When you look at furniture bring you decorating notebook and measuring tape with you. Measure everything you are interested in purchasing to verify that it will fit into the space you have. You can also use your notebook to jot down ideas on furniture placement when they come to you.

The basic rule of interior design is to make the space your own. By working slowing and keeping notes on what you do and do not like you can created your own interior design plans without any stress of anxiety. Before you know it your home will be decorated and all your friends will ask you for interior design tips.
